SERVICES
Retaining Walls
Dry stone retaining walls are stout, self-draining structures.
They are the oldest and most reliable means of erosion control. Their strength lies in their mass, their depth and the workings of friction and gravity. Grounded Stonework builds raw, stoic walls for the long haul.
Patios, Walkways & Stepping Stone Paths
Dry laid flagstone flatwork, whether a patio or walkway, is a resourceful and creative means by which to manage drainage and avoid flooding. Grounded Stonework uses a broad spectrum of flagstone of all shapes, sizes and colors to build original, enduring hardscapes.
Stairways
Dry stone stairways can be found the world around ascending mountain passes. A well laid stairway provides a solid, comfortable means of access over dynamic grade changes. Grounded Stonework builds burly dry stone stairways.
TESTIMONIALS
"Travis is a naturally connected artist in stone. For us he created a beautiful stairway fluidly connecting two garden areas reminiscent of a babbling stream spillway blending perfectly into the landscape."
- Greg M., Mariposa, CA
"Travis is just a uniquely skilled man. The quality of his stonework is rare to find."
- Erik B., East Asheville, NC
"Our new walkway and patio is a masterpiece! Watching Travis work, I appreciated the skill, time, and care involved in creating this aesthetically stunning but also structurally sound stonework. It is LAND ART using only natural rock and earth. The stones are all shaped and laid by hand, fitting together like a gorgeous KLIMT mosaic piece. Stone lasts forever and with these ancient dry stack techniques there is no synthetic interference. Travis' idea of a one-of-a-kind stone bench was a brilliant addition. Now every time I step out or sit down on these stones I feel a grateful connection to our property, knowing it will be passed down in our family for generations to come. Grazie Mille!"
- Peggy C., Mariposa, CA
"Travis did amazing, beautiful work creating two stone retaining walls in our backyard. The love he puts into the work definitely shows in the final product. Plus he's a really nice human being."
- Ann H., Oakland, CA
"Travis is a craftsman from the word go. He didn't quit until it was perfect."
- Tom M., Mariposa, CA
"I would like to recommend Travis Keller if you need a stonemason. He did a wonderful job for me last summer. I just had an idea of what I wanted with no detailed plans. We made an outline and he worked with me. It is wonderful to look out everyday and see what I envisioned come to life. Travis is highly reliable, trustworthy, and extremely hard working. That alone means everything these days. Some days he worked almost 9 hours a day. I had to tell him to go home. You are welcome to talk to me about him."
- Carolyn B., North Asheville, NC
"I found Travis by sheer luck, while he was working on another project. His craftsmanship and work ethic was impressive, so I commissioned a stone walkway at my home. I could not be happier with the results. The rock work is truly a piece of functional art, impeccable in execution, beautiful to look at and walk on. Travis is a master at his craft."

ABOUT
Grounded Stonework is a landscape design and construction business as well as a mantra for the work itself. Dry stone masonry is among the most traditional, resourceful and enduring means of construction known to man. It is simple, honest and humble by nature, grounded in the physics of friction and gravity. If a structure - be it a wall, a patio, a sculpture - is built in accordance with these principles, it becomes a part of the landscape, harmonious in form and function. Throughout the world, ancient dry stone ruins bear testament to the inherent strength, beauty and resilience of their elemental integrity. As slowly and surely as stone is formed, so too will a well-laid dry stone structure withstand the passage of time.
Grounded Stonework offers a broad spectrum of structural dry stone services, ranging from minor repairs to extensive reconstructions to original design and build creations. Whether it’s a failing wall, an eroding bank, a rutted out yard and/or a matter of puddling water during rainstorms, we provide a holistic remedy to the exploits of nature intrinsic to mountain living. From erosion control to flood abatement, ease of access to comprehensive aesthetic makeovers, we build retaining walls, garden terraces, stairways, walkways, patios and stepping stone paths.
Why dry? Time will tell.
The superiority of dry stonework to mortared stonework is inevitably and undeniably revealed in a matter of time. In a mortared work the strength lies not in gravity and friction, but rather in the mortar itself as the bonding agent holding the work together as a solid mass. Moreover, mortared works do not drain as all the joints are filled to provide cohesion and stability. Dry stoneworks, conversely, owe their strength and resilience to the interdependence of the stones and their ability to, over time and throughout the seasons, move and settle with the ground on which they lie. Because their joints are unblocked, they are naturally self-draining and thus do not restrict the flow of groundwater, releasing the accumulative hydrostatic pressure which is the eventual undoing of mortared works (walls in particular). Structural differences aside, dry stoneworks are more environmentally friendly in that they do not require water nor chemical bonds.
About the Mason:
Travis Keller grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in a mountain town outside California’s idyllic Yosemite National Park. He found a natural love of stonework when he took a job with the National Park Service as a seasonal trail worker building dry stone trails in Yosemite’s wilderness. He was profoundly influenced by a handful of veteran stonemasons who’d plied their trade throughout Yosemite’s high country as trail crew leaders. The structural integrity of the stonework throughout Yosemite is tested year after year, season after season, both by the heavy foot and livestock traffic of the spring and summer, and again by the rain and snowfall of fall and winter. Building snaking walls up switchbacks, meandering stairways over passes and flatwork causeways along canyons and streams, he learned to analyze environmental factors and properly design and build enduring stone structures in high exposure environments.
In the spring of 2015 he and his wife, Lennel, set their sights on Asheville, North Carolina. With the California drought setting in, they loaded their station wagon and hit the road. Before long Asheville came to feel like home. Travis has had the pleasure of collaborating with a handful of talented masons in the area and to work for a variety of kind and enthusiastic clients in and around Asheville. His work is inspired by his love for rocks and his commitment to the principles of sound and lasting dry stone masonry.
Grounded Stonework embodies the highest caliber of construction at competitive prices. We are devoted to the craft of dry stone masonry and take genuine pride in the work we do. While you can surely choose a cheaper means of construction, you get what you pay for. Railroad ties rot out, shallow flagstones break loose and cinder block mortared walls fall over. Dry stone structures go well beyond face value, and it’s what’s inside the work, its mass, depth, and the careful placement of every stone, that secure its enduring presence in the landscape. Every project is different, every endeavor nuanced in its own ways, so we take the time to explore the possibilities with respect to the cost of materials and labor. We always aim to please, and it’s been our experience that first time clients come away with a profound respect for the trade and a sense of money well spent. If you’re looking to make a sure and lasting investment in your property with inherent value appreciation, look no further than Grounded Stonework.
